Tell Me About Yourself, in 45 Seconds

Present, past, then the role you want. One honest clause about where you live. Then stop. Do not audition your whole biography.

This question places you. It is not a biography. Say the work you do now, one step that explains how you got there, and the role you are interviewing for. Then stop.

Present. "I handle paid-account questions for a billing product, and I rewrite the articles that cause repeat tickets."

Past. "Before this I worked in a shop, which is where I learned to calm a person down and then fix the actual problem."

Future. "I am looking for a remote support role on a product team. I live in Bogotá, and I want the writing and the customer work in the same job, on hours that overlap your morning."

That is enough. The city is relevant because they have to be able to hire you there, and because the hours are part of the job. A tour of your childhood is not relevant. A list of your children's names is not relevant. One clause that you want a remote role so you can live at home with your family is human, and it tells them you are not secretly hoping to relocate to their office. Then go back to the work.

If you are returning after a break, say it in one clause. "I took two years away from paid work while my children were small, and I kept a writing practice. The job I want is…" You do not owe a longer justification in the first minute.

Three versions, not a new speech

Write it once for the title you are targeting. The present line changes if you have a current job versus a job you left. The future line changes to the exact title on the posting, plus your city if it affects hiring. The past line can stay.

Record it. If you pass about 70 seconds, cut the past, not the future. If you say you led a team and you coordinated one project, change the verb before they ask how many people reported to you. The first minute is where exaggerations get expensive.

If they interrupt, answer the interruption. Do not restart from your hometown to get back to the script.

The longer walkthrough is how to answer tell me about yourself. Use that when you want every variation. Use this when you need something you can say tomorrow, including the sentence about where you live.
